Désirée’s Baby” is a story of love at the begging, but gradually starts disclosing an extremely negative side of humanity. Kate Chopin illustrates a society full of discrimination, fear, and rejection. The main character of this story, Désirée, was abandoned as a child but got raised by Monsieur and Madame Valmondé. They were a wealthy Family that treated her as their own.

At the age of eighteen, Désirée marries Armand Aubigny, a prosperous Louisiana plantation owner who falls truly in love with her. Later, they have a baby boy that brings nothing but happiness to their lives. However, one day, while the son of one of the slaves of Armand is tending the baby, Désirée realizes the physical resemblances between this child and her son. As a result, she questions her own heritage and believes that she may have African-American ancestry. Then, she shares her fear with her husband, who indifferently says that the baby is not white. He blames her for bringing shame on his name and compromising his social standing. Therefore, he does not love her anymore.

Armand accuses her of being a person of color, and during this dispute it is evident how this young mother defends herself despite her usual serene nature by saying that he is a liar. She even offers him proof by mentioning the look of her skin, eyes, and hair (Chopin, 1894/2017, p.445). This way, she is supporting her opinion and demonstrating that Armand’s accusations are false.

After much agony, this poor girl approaches her husband, and asks him if he wants her to leave the house and without any remorse he says yes. Consequently, she takes their child and leaves instantly without ever returning.

It is so sad how this plantation owner sacrificed his own son and wife just to protect his name and personal safety.

Throughout the story, Chopin intentionally gives the reader the idea that Armand Aubigny is not a possible source for his son to have African-American racial characteristics. But, the most interesting and least expected part of the story is when Armand’s mother turns out to be a person of color.

On the other hand, In David Sedaris’s short story, the protagonist suffers from a different type of discrimination, but equally important.

“A Modest Proposal”, describes how gay communities endure constant social discrimination in a “straight” society. Sedaris describes how difficult was for him to feel accepted by others, but more importantly by himself.

The author details excruciating memories of being gay as a child. He painfully describes how devastated he was when he saw how indifferent his mother looked at him when she realized that her son was homosexual (Sedaris, 2015).

David clearly pushes against boundaries imposed by society by deciding to propose to his boyfriend eighteen times after Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage. Nevertheless, he states that he does not need the law to authorize homosexual unions. He advocates that homosexual and heterosexual unions be treated in the same way.
