In groups of 4 to 6, each team will complete a research project on starting a business in Canada.

Your team will prepare a 5 to 7-page summary report along with a 10 to 15-minute informational presentation with power point.

The summary report in addition to the power point presentation needs to be submitted to the Instructor before the presentation. The presentation should be delivered orally but look for images, photos or video clips to add meaning and interest to your presentation. Presentation and power point must meet APA requirements.

Every member of the team is expected to participate.

Report and Presentation Guidelines

• Cover page includes – report title, course name, group member names and student numbers – date and Instructors name
• The following should be to APA format – size 12-point font (APA acceptable script) – double spaced – insert page numbers – use heading or titles – references at end of report
• Should include an introduction at the beginning and a summary at the end
• Edit your report for readability, grammar, spelling, and punctuation

Power point slides should follow standard business presentation practices. Font size should not be less than 30 point. Text must be contrasting colour to background. Images, videos, or pictures etc, should be imbedded in the presentation (make sure they work)

The starting point for any business plan is coming up with a great idea. For your final project you will be working in groups of 4 to 6 and the first task will be to determine the type of business you will be starting. See the questions in the 3-part framework below, suggested as a guideline for your project.

Part 1

What is the name of your business?

What will your business do?

What form of business ownership will you choose? Why?

Describe your products or services.

How will you finance your company?

Discuss how you will manage risk.

Part 2

Create a business mission/vision statement.

Create a company organizational chart – how many employees, how many managers?

Create a code of ethics for your company.

How will you handle corporate social responsibility?

How will you manage your operations/service provision?

Describe the supply chain for your company.

Part 3

Discuss your business strategy.

How will you measure success?

Talk about profitability and quality.

What is your marketing strategy?

What is your pricing strategy?

Consider issues related to the global expansion of your company.

What country would you choose to expand into and why?

Overall, how do you think your company will be doing in 10 years?
