Prior to beginning work on this assignment, be sure to review Van Herk (2018), Chapter 9, paying special attention to the S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G method of discourse analysis and the Table 9.1.
This week, you will create an outline of your Final Paper (see Outlining
(Links to an external site.)
for assistance). Your task is to observe speech in a particular setting and assess it using Hymes’ S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G model. Your methods of observing events can be informed by your major.
Applied linguistics majors include (but are not limited to)
Conversation between family members at a dinner table.
Conversation between people in a public place, such as a business.
Conversation at a social event, such as a birthday or anniversary.
For this assignment, you must:
Analyze, through preliminary observations of one paragraph or less, the observed conversation in terms of the eight aspects of the S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G acronym with observations on gender, power relations, age, ethnicity, race, and factors such as the use of dialect, accent, paralinguistics, and so forth that inform the dynamic of the conversation. Consider how linguistic variations and how language is impacted by race, gender, socioeconomic class, and so forth. These will be more fully developed in your final essay; here, bullet points and brief sentences are all that’s required. These will help guide your thesis statement.
Develop a thesis that describes the speech situation and event and asserts a sociolinguistic point.
Analyze, through preliminary thoughts of a paragraph or less, how these perceptions and realities impact areas of public policy (such as the method employed by politicians, advertisers, and popular culture) as well as aspects of gender, class, power, and dialect where appropriate. These thoughts do not have to be fully developed at this stage but should offer the reader a glimpse of where your essay is headed.
Describe, through preliminary thoughts of a paragraph or less, how a greater understanding of sociolinguistics can affect tangible change in the real world .
Introduction:
Background information
Description of the speech situation, event, and participants very briefly
Background information on the where, when, who, why, and how of the speech event.
A tentative thesis statement relating your observation to the S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G model, which could be further developed in your Final Paper in Week 5. Place the thesis statement in the last sentence or two. Refer to the Ashford Writing Center resources for assistance on writing Introductions & Conclusions

Body: In this outline.
Provide a header or topic sentence for each paragraph or section you will be addressing.
Include supporting direct and indirect conversation speech from your chosen speech event.
Provide a brief (one-two sentence) analysis of your observations to be expanded in your Final Paper
Conclusion: Your conclusion does not have to be completed in the outline, but should at least have a header and a re-statement (in different words) of your thesis. For the Final Paper, you will expand this to a full conclusion.
References: In your Final Paper Outline, you must cite at least one potential scholarly and/or credible source that supports your observations in addition to the textbook. You will add more before your final essay. Your outline
Must include a separate references page that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. See the Formatting Your References List

resource in the Ashford Writing Center for specifications.
Must include at least three potential sources that you might use in addition to your textbook. These sources need to be scholarly and/or credible (see the Scholarly, Peer Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources
