Essay Topics
You can select one of the following topics for the essay. Your essays should be around 2,500 words-long, excluding footnotes and bibliography. For your essays you should use the MLA referencing system. It is very important that you include the exact number or title of the essay topic –as it appears below –and not for example ‘Greeks in North America’ which would apply to at least three of the questions.
1.Discuss and explain the main reasons for the emigration of Greeks to North America from Anatolia and the Balkans in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
2.Why did Greeks in North America formed communities? Discuss the characteristics of these communities.
3.What similarities would you identify between the communal organization of Greeks in their places of origin and in their new communities in North America and elsewhere?
4.What was the place and role of Greeks in Egypt and Egyptian economy and society and what were the reasons they eventually left?
5.Discuss the conditions of immigration, settlement and integration of Greeks in Canada in the first half of the 20th century (until the 1950s) with particular reference to the immigration policies of the Canadian state.
