How the discovery of America changed the world

“The discovery of America, and that of the passage to the East Indies by the Cape of Good Hope, are the two greatest events recorded in the history of [human] kind”—Adam Smith, in The Wealth of Nations, 1776. Think about why he and many other notables supported this statement, especially concerning the discovery of America. What was so important about this New World across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe? How did it change globalization in terms of trade, culture, societies, innovations, old and new world exchanges, and in other ways?

Part 1:
1. Write a thesis statement that is one to two (1-2) sentences long in which you:

State your thesis on how the discovery of America changed the world. Justify your response.

For the first part of this assignment, you will create a thesis statement. A thesis statement is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presents your main idea to the reader. The body of the essay organizes the material you gather and present in support of your main idea. Keep in mind that a thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself.

Write a three to five (3-5) page paper in which you:

Introduce your paper with your thesis statement. Thesis statement should be one to two (1-2) sentences long in which you:
State your thesis on how the discovery of America changed the world. Justify your response.

Identify three (3) major aspects that demonstrate Old and New World exchanges. Explain your responses with specific examples and details.

Identify three (3) specific groups that were affected by this global event and provide two (2) examples for each group describing how the group was affected.

Summarize how this discovery affected the life of the average working American during the colonial period. Use specific examples and details.

Use at least three (3) academic references besides or in addition to the textbook. Note: Wikipedia and other similar websites do not qualify as academic resources.

The following are the main points of SWS that I will check for in your written assignments.

Title Page

The written assignments in this HIS 104 course require a title page. For Strayer Writing Standards (SWS), this means you provide the following information on the title page:

Assignment title

Your name

Course title

Professor’s name

Date of submission.

Font style and size

Strayer Writing Standards (SWS) allows students to use a number of font styles and font sizes in their papers.

For font style, you may use:

Arial, Courier, Times New Roman, or Calibri.

For font size, you may use:

10-, 11-, or 12-point font size for the body of your written assignments.

For this HIS 104 course, I would recommend using 12-point Times New Roman (since this is easily readable and the same as that used in APA style). You can, though, use a different combination from the options listed above.

Page number

The page number should be on the right side of the header of the document. The page number should not appear on the title page.

Citations

As with all academic assignments, citations are required when you give a direct quotations, or when you refer to information you obtained from a particular source.

For SWS, you include the author’s last name and the number of the citation. For example, (Jones, 1).

Reference Page

When using SWS, as with APA, you must provide a reference page on the last page of your assignments. At the top center of the page should be the word ‘Sources’. References must be numbered, and should be numbered in the order in which they appear in the assignment. Thus, the first reference cited in the assignment must be numbered 1, the second 2, and so on.

References

References for SWS should contain the following pieces of information: Author, Publication Date, Title, Page No., and How to find it (i.e. url). It is not enough to just give a url.
