–Plagiarism is a serious academic offense –a scholarly crime, because it is stealing another’s possessions,i.e., thoughts and hard work. To avoid plagiarism, keep track of the works that have contributed to your intellectual development in the paper and learn how to cite and paraphrase properly.

Footnotes are how you communicate as you are proceeding through the paper which source influenced you and precisely where. If a work helps you understand an idea or you use exact words (quote), then you must cite the source. You must attribute “ideas” and “information”, and not simply “quotes” and “data” to their original authors. If you do not, you are plagiarizing.

While one way to avoid plagiarism is to provide complete quotes from your sources, you need to “paraphrase” so that the number of quotes is limited. Paraphrase is restating in your own words the ideas and arguments of the original source, which must be cited in a footnote. You must write the paper “in your own words” but still cite the source if it was the author’s idea. If you cannot convey the author’s idea in your own words, then use a quote.
