There are seven basic functions of advertising. Each of these functions plays an important part in the success of advertising. Three of these functions are mentioned in your textbook reading as well as in the articles listed below. One of these critical functions is identification. The consumer must know what the product is and where to find it. Another function is information. As a consumer, you want to know what a product is for and why you might need it. For businesses, being able to inform your customer creatively and ingeniously can put you ahead of your competition. A third basic function of advertising is persuasion. A business that is able to effectively persuade the consumption of their product can stay afloat and even thrive in their field. If advertising a product is not done well, it is less likely the sale of the product will reach its highest potential. Advertising is used to increase sales. Advertising can truly be the be-all and end-all of a product.

What is advertising? According Merriam-Webster dictionary, advertising is the action of calling something to the attention of the public especially by paid announcements. It is derived from the Latin word meaning “to turn attention.” Individuals often interchange the words advertising and marketing, however, it is important to understand that advertising is a part of marketing.
