Setting up the process
Split up the surveys evenly across your group members
Using the master sheet you created identify which question #’s go with your first construct and highlight those questions in one color. Mark the reverse coded question(s) with a large “R”
Identify the questions of your second construct and highlight those in a different color. Mark the reverse coded question(s) with a large “R”
Check your surveys for inconsistent responses
Compare the responses given for the reverse coded question(s) and the other questions for each construct. Reverse coded questions should have a response that is towards the opposite end of your scale if the participant was answering consistently. If all responses are on the same end of the scale you may want to consider throwing that survey out.
For the remaining surveys write the unique participant # in the space you provided, starting at 2and proceeding sequentially. There should be no duplicate #’s across all surveys.
Calculate mean score for each construct for each participant
For each question marked with an “R” switch the value of the response option given with its oppositeand write this value next to the question. See below for examples:
4 point scale: Switch 1 with 4; Switch 2 with 3
5 point scale: Switch 1 with 5; Switch 2 with 4; 3 remains a 3
6 point scale: Switch 1 with 6; Switch 2 with 5; Switch 3 with 4
For each construct add up the values for each question and divide by the # of questions answered. Write this mean value and the construct it goes with at the top of each survey.
