Synthesis Analysis

Guidelines

Using the three sources that you found and your titan’s original article from Tools of Titans, write an essay synthesizing the idea or suggestion made by your chosen Titan. If you do not understand what a synthesis entails, please spend a few minutes on Google finding out.

You must incorporate all three of your library database sources used in the precis assignments, citing appropriately. You may also add information from additional sources that relate specifically to your chosen titan, if necessary, also citing appropriately. I would expect to see that this idea or suggestion comes from your titan discussed in either your first or second paragraph. It would be entirely appropriate to introduce your titan and idea together, focusing on the titan’s suggestion, not necessarily on the titan. Mentioning the book Tools of Titans would also be expected.

Use most or all of the following to analyze your titan’s idea:
1. Summarize the titan’s idea.
2. Explain/analyze your expert’s ideas and research.
3. Explain how and to what extent the other articles/authors agree or disagree with your titan.
4. Consider how your experts from your precis agree and disagree with another author.
a. Are the authors all in agreement?
b. How do the findings of the researchers/experts fit together?
c. What is not understood about the idea or what research still needs to be conducted?
d. Does one author extend the research of another author?
5. Besides the three rhetorical precis you wrote previously, what other ideas or research could you find that would help your reader understand either your titan’s idea or the research regarding it?
6. Examine the validity of your titan’s claim in light of the research.

Submit the assignment to Canvas.

Format
Include APA-formatted in-text citations and References page, an appropriate cover page/title page, and appropriate pagination in the top right corner of each page. You do NOT need to write an abstract or executive summary.

Length
Five pages minimum, NOT including the title page and References page, all double-spaced

Some suggestions for your Synthesis Analysis paper

Hello and welcome to the most useful resource for writing a Synthesis Analysis paper that has EVER been created. In my humble opinion, there is more useful material assembled here than in any other assignment you have or will ever do. I know it’s a lot, but it’s all for your use to make your paper better. Use it as you see fit, but you are held accountable for the material this resource explains. I recommend beginning your writing process by looking it over and finding the suggestions that you need the most help with; but, however you use it, before you finish writing your Synthesis Analysis (and way before you consider submitting it), be sure to check that you have done the following:

1. You began by using an organizational tool that helped you organize your thoughts, ideas, and resources. This allows you to create a paper that has a strong thesis, logical structure, and incorporates experts’ ideas and words. Spending time organizing and prewriting will pay dividends by making the writing process easier and saving you time.

2. You have a strong, clearly written thesis that is the guiding concept for your paper. This should be a road map for what will be in your synthesis, but should NOT say something like, “In this essay I will…”

3. Your body paragraphs have topic sentences that introduce the general topic you will cover in that paragraph. This sentence should have some kind of relation to the thesis also. If something isn’t included in the topic sentence, don’t include it in the paragraph. Your topic sentence should NOT contain research, be where you introduce one of your articles, or contain a citation. A topic sentence is limited to introducing the overall topic of the paragraph and possibly transitioning from the previous paragraph.

4. Every body paragraph utilizes research, quotes research, paraphrases research, and cites research. Only your introduction and conclusion are excluded from this rule. ALL other paragraphs need to be content (research) driven and contain information gleaned from your precis’ articles or elsewhere. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that I should see a minimum of three citations in each of your body paragraphs. While this isn’t a hard, fast rule, it is generally what I would expect to see.

5. You clearly explain your titan’s idea, how he or she recommends utilizing it, and how the articles you found support or refute it. It should be clear what the titan argues, if your other authors agree or disagree, and how the arguments utilize logos, ethos, and pathos to persuade the audience. Whether or not an audience is persuaded (including you) may also be included.

6. Your paper has a logical flow of ideas with intentional organization. I should be able to follow your thinking from Point A to Point B to Point C with relative ease, understanding the purpose for each point and how your synthesis fits together like a jigsaw puzzle.

7. You do not overuse the “I” or “you” words. It is occasionally acceptable to say, “I think _____” or “I agree with ______’s argument,” but most students throw this in too frequently. “You” may be used, but not in the context of referring to the reader or me. When in doubt, find a way to leave it out.

8. You introduce the authors of the other articles you are using for support (these should include, but are not limited to, the precis articles for APA #1, APA #2 and APA #3). As a minimum you should include first and last names, a brief credential, and the title of the article (with a year I parenthesis). After the initial introduction, you can simply refer to the author and article by the last name of the author.

9. You have used author’s names correctly. Only the first time you introduce an author do you use her or his full name. From then on, you refer to them by last name only. If you are quoting Tom Brady, you should say “Brady claims…” NOT “Tom claims…” Also, spelling is important. When I see an author’s name spelled differently on the reference page than you spelled it throughout your paper, I get confused. Don’t mess up on the easy stuff.

10. Your paper is at least four pages long. You need to have this kind of length because it gives you ample room to discuss your titan’s ideas. If you do not have at least four pages, your grade will be adversely affected.

11. You use APA format for both in-text and Reference citations. Surprisingly, many students do not take the time to discover what this looks like before submitting their papers, and their scores suffer as a result. There is also a correct format for your title page, running header, and page number that should be followed.

12. You have revised and edited. Sometimes a paper feels like it was written and submitted in a couple of hours, and the grade suffers accordingly. Ideally you write your paper, let it sit for a day or more, return to it for revision, then, before submitting it, go back through and fix the grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. It may be necessary to visit the WRC on campus and receive assistance. You are welcome to ask for feedback from family members, roommates, your instructor, or random strangers. Often it is difficult to see where you are falling short, but others may catch errors that you are blind to. If you cannot find anyone to read your paper, try reading it aloud. Often we are better at knowing something is incorrect if we hear it – even more than seeing it.

13. You do not use the word “mention, mentions, or mentioned.” I’m not sure where this word came into vogue, but it is extremely overused. It means someone included it briefly, almost as an afterthought. Typically, students use it instead of “discuss, discusses, or discussed.” “Mentions” means it is only a small part of their argument while “discusses” means it is something they brought up repeatedly and analyzed in depth. Make sure you are using the correct word for the situation. Also, do not ask questions. The only possible place you should ask questions is the first or (maybe) second sentence of the introduction. Please see the following websites for suggestions on other words or phrases to avoid:

Words and Phrases to Avoid

Obviously, you still need to have a good argument and include research from your precis, but students who do the aforementioned things will be much better off than those who strike out haphazardly on their own.
