Literature Review Assignment
From the list of references that you have assembled for the Annotated Bibliography, select three or four articles that are the most relevant and useful for your topic. Make sure that these are actual studies that have been conducted, and not general discussions of a topic. (Examples of studies are all the articles I have posted in the first folder of the Course Materials). Read your articles carefully and think about them. Write an introduction that presents your research topic and the research question you have formulated (clear independent and dependent variable, i.e. How do stress levels affect women’s alcohol intake?) If you do not have a clear research question such as this, you will be very behind when it’s time to write the research proposal. After you have read your articles, you will write a careful review of these three to four studies that makes clear what they have to contribute to your research project. This assignment should be about four pages. (If you can’t find three or four articles on your list which seem suitable, you may need to do some further research in the literature).
In your review, you should first present your research topic — use the summary you prepared for the annotated bibliography, but develop it, improve it and state it more precisely. The introduction should clearly state what you would be doing. It needs a precise cause and effect statement and not general or vague concepts. This should be easier now that you have some familiarity with the literature. This introduction should be an improvement of the previous introductions. Next, present briefly what each article says by using your own words. This should note the type of study and type of data on which the study is based (i.e. sample of public opinion, study of high school students in New York City, unmarried mothers in California etc.) and then present the main explanations or arguments that are relevant to your research problem. Your review should offer your own evaluation of the usefulness of each study. A literature review is NOT just a summarization of an article, it should also be a synthesis of findings. Refer to the handout of what a good review looks like. Do not include information that is not relevant. You also should not worry about statistical terminology; simply focus on the main findings.
As you are writing your reviews of the literature, try to make them as useful as you can for the study of your topic. Imagine that you are writing this account for an employer in a research organization, who has assigned you the task of reviewing the literature. You need to lay out for your employer the main points in the literature you have reviewed, and present a summary of the information that is relevant and helpful in understanding the problem. The employer’s goal is to do some new research on this problem and maybe propose a new explanation or a new way to resolve the problem. To do this effectively, it is essential to know and understand what others have already done. Your essay should give a coherent review and evaluation, and it should also be clearly written.
Remember that the quality of your writing is important. Try to use academic words and phrases. Please avoid terms such as: “kinda”, “gonna”, “kids”, “you know”, “like” etc. If there is an academic term for the word you are using you should choose it instead of using informal language. After you finish a draft of your paper, take a break and then come back to it and edit and rewrite as necessary. Make sure that your essay develops in a logical way (the last sentence in the preceding paragraph gives a useful guide). Go over each sentence and ask yourself if you are saying what you want to say simply and clearly. – edit out all the words and phrases you don’t need. create
